Casing
Centralizers keep the casing off the borehole wall so cement can circulate all the way round the pipe.
If casing lies against the formation, cement cannot get past that side and the isolation is incomplete. A bow-spring centralizer, which is what the photograph shows, uses sprung bows to hold the pipe nearer the centre of the hole. A rigid centralizer is a different piece, used where the programme wants a fixed standoff. The order says which one, the casing size, the hole size, and how many.
