Tools that run above the bit
The bottom-hole assembly is the set of tools between the drill pipe and the bit. Roller reamers keep the hole in gauge. A mud motor turns the bit with the mud flow. A shock tool damps axial vibration. A jar frees stuck pipe and is not the same object as a shock tool. Stabilizers control where the collars touch the wall.
- Each tool has its own outside diameter and its own connections.
