Drill string

Edatm supplies the tubulars that make up the drill string: drill pipe, heavy-weight drill pipe and drill collars.

Drill string

The pipe that connects the rig to the bit

Drill pipe carries the bottom-hole assembly, turns it, and is the conduit for drilling fluid. Heavy-weight drill pipe is the transition to the drill collars, which put weight on the bit. Edatm supplies those tubulars against API Spec 5DP and API Spec 7-1 when the order names those specifications.

  • Outside diameter, grade, connection and range are the quotation.
  • Collars and heavy-weight pipe are separate lines on the same enquiry if you want them.
  • The photograph is drill pipe. It is not a picture of every grade.

The pieces

Three tubulars, three jobs

They are run together. They are not the same part.

  • Drill pipe

The length of the string. Tension, torque and mud flow.

  • Heavy-weight drill pipe

Thicker pipe used as the transition into the collars.

  • Drill collars

Stiff, heavy joints that provide weight on bit.
