Rig floor

Machines that handle and turn the string

An iron roughneck spins drill pipe and torques the connection, which is the job manual tongs do on rigs without one. Elevators hang the string from the hook. Slips hold it in the rotary while a connection is made. A rotary table and kelly bushing turn the string on a kelly rig. The table photograph is that bushing, turning. A top drive is a different machine.

  • Pipe size range and torque are the roughneck quotation.
  • A tee in the mud piping is a fitting, not a drill-string crossover.
  • Drawworks and hooks are quoted when you describe the hoist you need.
