Drill string

Drill pipe

Drill pipe joins the surface equipment to the bottom-hole assembly, carries drilling fluid down to the bit, and transmits rotation and tension.

Drill pipe is the main tubular in the drill string. Each joint is a steel tube with a tool joint on either end. In the hole it has three jobs at once: it holds the tools below it, it turns them, and it is the pipe the mud flows through. Above the pipe, heavy-weight drill pipe is often run as a transition, and drill collars below that put weight on the bit. Those can be quoted on the same enquiry. Say so, and give the outside diameter, the connection and the number of joints.

The usual purchase specification for drill pipe is API Spec 5DP. The order names the outside diameter, the weight or wall, the grade (for example E-75, X-95, G-105 or S-135), the connection, the length range and whether the pipe is new or inspected used. We do not publish a generic strength figure in place of that grade.

What it is used for

Drill pipe

Drill pipe is the tubular that links the rig to the bottom-hole assembly. It carries tension and torque, and drilling fluid goes down through it. Heavy-weight pipe and drill collars can be quoted with it. They are not the same joint.

What the quotation needs

We quote the piece you name. A missing size or standard is a question, not a guess.

  • Size and grade

Outside diameter, weight and API grade.

  • Connection

    The tool-joint thread.

  • Range and quantity

Length range and the number of joints.
