Casing

Float equipment

A float shoe and a float collar act as check valves on the casing string so cement and mud do not flow back up the pipe.

The float shoe is the guide on the bottom of the casing. The float collar is run one or two joints above it. Both contain a valve that lets fluid be pumped down the casing and stops it coming back. That is what lets the crew cement the casing and then keep the cement where it was placed. The photograph shows float equipment crated for shipment, with casing behind the crates.

The order names the casing size, the thread, the valve type, and whether the programme wants a guide shoe, a float shoe, or both a shoe and a collar.

What it is used for

Float equipment

The shoe on the bottom of the casing, and the collar a joint or two above it, let fluid be pumped down and stop it flowing back. That is what keeps cement in place after the job. The photograph shows the equipment crated, not the valve inside.
