Rig floor

Iron roughnecks

An iron roughneck spins drill pipe and torques the connection on the rig floor, in place of manual tongs for that job.

Making up and breaking out drill pipe is repetitive and it is where people get hurt if the tong slips. An iron roughneck is the rig-floor machine that spins the pipe and then torques the connection to the figure the driller sets. The photograph is that machine at the well centre.

Manual tongs, elevators and slips are still part of a rig's handling set. Elevators carry the string from the hook. Slips grip the pipe in the rotary or the spider so a connection can be broken. We quote those when the enquiry lists them. This page is the roughneck.

The order names the pipe sizes it must grip, the torque range, the rig it has to fit, and the power available on that floor.
