Drill bits

PDC drill bits

A PDC bit shears the formation with polycrystalline diamond cutters. It is selected for the rock, not from a single hardness number.

Polycrystalline diamond compact cutters are diamond tables on a tungsten-carbide substrate, set on a steel or matrix body. The bit fails the rock in shear as it rotates. It is a common choice in many oil and gas formations. It is the wrong bit where the formation, the vibrations or the dulling mechanism call for a roller-cone bit instead.

Roller-cone bits, milled-tooth or tungsten-carbide insert, are a separate tool. They crush and gouge the rock with three cones. We will quote them when the enquiry says so. The photographs on this page are PDC bits. We will not label a PDC bit as a roller-cone bit.

The order should name the hole size, the connection, the formation as the customer knows it, and any preference for body material, cutter size and blade count. Operating limits belong on the maker's sheet for that bit, attached when we have it.

What it is used for

PDC drill bits

The cutters shear the formation as the bit turns. This is the bit to specify when the programme calls for a PDC bit. A roller-cone bit is a different purchase. The second photograph, in the gallery, is a PDC bit in a workshop and is also not a roller-cone bit.

What the quotation needs

We quote the piece you name. A missing size or standard is a question, not a guess.

  • Hole size

The diameter you need to drill.

  • Connection

The pin that matches the collar or motor.

  • Formation

What you know about the rock, however short.
