Downhole tools

Roller reamers

A roller reamer is run in the bottom-hole assembly to keep the hole in gauge and to stabilise the string.

Roller reamers sit in the drill string above the bit. The rollers bear on the borehole wall. They dress the hole back towards the bit size and they steady the bottom-hole assembly, which reduces the chance of an under-gauge hole and of the string wearing against one side. They are not the bit, and they are not a hole opener sized to step the hole up to a new diameter. If the job is to enlarge the hole, say that, and we will quote a hole opener or an under-reamer instead.

The order names the hole size, the body outside diameter, the connection up and down, and whether the rollers are for a soft or a hard formation.

What it is used for

Roller reamers

Run above the bit, the rollers bear on the borehole wall and keep the hole at gauge. They also steady the bottom-hole assembly. They do not replace the bit, and they are not a hole opener.

  • The gauge the rollers must dress.
  • Thread up and thread down.
  • Soft-formation or hard-formation cutters.
