Solids control
Shale shakers are the first solids-control machines. Vibrating screens take cuttings out of the drilling fluid so the fluid can be pumped again.
Mud returning from the well still carries the rock the bit has cut. The shale shaker shakes that fluid over screens. Cuttings stay on the screens and the fluid passes through into the tanks. Without that step the pumps would circulate a fluid that gets thicker and more abrasive every minute.
Desanders, desilters, mud cleaners and centrifuges take finer solids out further down the pit system. They can be quoted with the shakers. Mud pumps, which create the circulation, are quoted from liner size, pressure and stroke. A pump photograph is not on this page. The photographs are shakers: the motors, the screen bed and the trough under the screens.
The order names the flow the rig circulates, the number of decks, the screen mesh the formation needs, and whether the machine is for oil-based or water-based fluid.
