Refinery equipment

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers

A shell-and-tube exchanger transfers heat between two streams. On a crude unit it is how the feed is warmed before the furnace.

In a refinery crude unit, hot product streams give up heat to the incoming crude in a train of exchangers. The crude then needs less furnace fuel to reach distillation temperature. A shell-and-tube exchanger does that by putting one fluid through the tubes and the other through the shell. The same machine is used elsewhere in a plant wherever two streams should exchange heat and a plate exchanger is not the right choice.

The construction code, when it is specified, is usually ASME Section VIII, and the mechanical design is usually described in TEMA class. The order needs the duty: both flow rates, both temperatures in and out, the allowable pressure drop, the fouling, and the materials. We do not publish a surface area for "an exchanger" as if one size fitted a crude unit.

What it is used for

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers

One stream flows through the tubes and the other through the shell, and heat moves between them. On a crude unit this is how the feed is heated before the furnace. The exchanger is sized from the duty. There is no single surface area that suits every crude.

  • Flows, temperatures in and out, allowable pressure drop.
  • What each stream will do to the metal.
  • ASME and TEMA type, when you require them.
