Downhole tools

Shock tools

A shock tool in the bottom-hole assembly absorbs axial vibration so less of it reaches the rest of the string.

Drilling vibrates the bit and the tools above it. A shock tool, sometimes called a shock sub, is a telescoping member that damps that axial movement. It is there to spare the bit, the motor and the connections from part of that load. It is not a drilling jar. A jar is run to deliver a blow when the string is stuck. If the enquiry is for a jar, say jar, and name hydraulic or mechanical, the outside diameter and the placement the drilling programme expects.

The order for a shock tool names the outside diameter, the connections and the hole section it will run in.

What it is used for

Shock tools

The tool shortens and lengthens enough to take part of the axial shock out of the bottom-hole assembly. It is not a jar. If the string is stuck and you need a blow, ask for a jar and say whether it is hydraulic or mechanical.
